Summary: Shimpei Kato (Hiroshi Tamaki) is best friends with Sayuri Takakura (Harauka Ayase) since their childhood. He’s an outgoing and sweet child and, although Sayuri is mute, they are able to communicate. They live in the same village and spend all their time together. She always has a sketch pad with her and he likes to roam play in nature (fishing, walking around, etc). He starts to draw and becomes very good at it. They continue to live their lives in the small village. 12 years later, when they are 20 years old, Shimpei has the chance to go to Tokyo to pursue his art. However, he misses Sayuri. Meanwhile, Sayuri is forced to get married to Eizo, also a childhood friend who has liked her for a while. Eizo is considered to be “successful” in that village because he has a steady job at the factory (or was it a mine?). Something to do with pumps and water. Anyways, Sayuri doesn’t want to get married, but she doesn’t have a choice because her father wants to see her secure and Eizo can provide a secure future.
Somehow, Shimpei finds out that Sayuri is getting married and he comes back to steal her. Sayuri must make a decision between Shimpei, her childhood friend and Eizo, whom her father accepts as his future son-in-law.
Impression: Hiroshi Tamaki (from Tada Kimi wo Aishiteru/Heavenly Forest) is in this movie and he’s pretty much the same type of character…sweet and quiet. I liked the young Shimpei better than Hiroshi because he was so outgoing. I liked the scene between young Shimpei and young Eizo where they’re competing who can draw the best picture of Sayuri. So sweet! This movie is a nice love story and I really like the characters. It’s a feel-good movie and sweet. The scenery is really pretty, too.

The leads are such good actors. I also really like Hiroshi Abe (her dad). Recently (well, not that recently, but in the past year), I’ve seen each of them in a comedy drama. So different from their characters in this movie, but they’re so good at acting! Hiroshi Tamaki in Nodame Cantabile, Harauka Ayase in Hotaru no Hikari and Hiroshi Abe in Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. Not new dramas, but I haven’t seen them until now.
I can’t think of any other movies like this one…maybe Taiwanese movie Secret (pretty dramatic, but good movie and ending…if you like time traveling movies).
